Lung nodules are small, solid, or fluid-filled sacs that form in the lungs. They can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous), and their size may vary from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. They can also be difficult to diagnose and treat, as there are various types of lung nodules with different underlying causes. Diagnosis often requires special imaging tests from a highly-trained team of pulmonologists.

When it comes to diagnosing lung nodules, CT scan imaging is typically used first. CT scans produce detailed 3-dimensional images of any structure inside the body, which allow us to accurately diagnose and classify different types of lung nodules. With this information, doctors can develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.
Our medical team is trained in the latest technologies, including ION robotic bronchoscopy and Endobronchial Ultrasound. These advanced technologies allow us to accurately biopsy and diagnose even the smallest of lung nodules. Ion Robotic bronchoscopy and Endobronchial Ultrasound are minimally invasive and can be done as an outpatient procedure.
Our team of highly-trained specialists will work with you to determine the best course of action based on your individual needs.
The most common causes of lung nodules include cancer, infections such as tuberculosis and fungal infections, and exposure to environmental pollutants. Less common causes include granulomas (clusters of inflammatory cells due to infection or other conditions), trauma, radiation therapy, exposure to asbestos, and sarcoidosis (a condition that causes inflammation in the lungs). In some cases, the cause is not known.
Common symptoms of lung nodules include chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, and fatigue. Other less common symptoms may include fever, weight loss, and night sweats. If the nodule is large or has infiltrated other parts of the body, other more serious symptoms can occur such as coughing up blood or severe pain in the affected area.
